Immigration Detainee Hunger Strike Ongoing

Almost 50 immigration detainees have been on hunger strike since July 11 at the Central East Correctional Centre and Toronto East Detention Centre. They are demanding a commitment from Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale to impose a 90-day limit on immigration detentions and to end maximum security imprisonment for these detentions.
These demands come in the wake of 15 detainee deaths since 2000, 3 of which occurred in the last 5 months. As of press time, there are reports of a Canada Border Services Agency crackdown on the protest. Janna Bryson interviews Tracey Mann from the End Immigration Detention Network for the CKUT news collective.
