Khurshid Begum Awan has now been in sanctuary for over six months. She chose to take sanctuary in a Montreal church last August to avoid deportation back to Pakistan. Her husband was deported last year and now lives in hiding as the family has received threats. His life is constantly in danger and so would be Khurshid’s if she returns to Pakistan. Being in sanctuary is also stopping Khurshid from getting the medical care that she currently needs. This situation causes Khurshid, as well as her daughter Tahira and grandson Ali who live in Montreal a lot of daily stress. CKUT’s Amelie Phillipson met her in the Church were she as taken sanctuary.
